Peak oil boogeyman RE "BEFORE the pumps run dry," Steve Yetiv column, op-ed, Feb. 27: Professor Yetiv's contention that we will face peak oil production by 2020 is not supported by the facts. He ignores recent advances in oil drilling methods, such as the hydraulic fracturing technique now taking place in the Bakken field in North Dakota (see "New drilling method opens vast oil fields in U.S.," news, Feb. 13) which have caused domestic oil production to increase for the past two years. By 2020, the increased production using this method alone will be enough to decrease our oil imports by half, more than enough to free us from any reliance on Middle East oil.
